Inauguration of "Scientia" Journal club

The inaugural ceremony of "Scientia," an academic and research-oriented journal club, was a momentous occasion that commenced with an insightful introduction upon the profound significance of the word "Scientia," emphasizing its Latin roots as the embodiment of knowledge. The event introduced the club's mission and highlighted a series of upcoming events, focusing on academic and research enrichment. "Scientia" aims to support students pursuing MSC and Ph.D. degrees with monthly competitions, including panel discussions, scientific quizzes, and exhibitions showcasing the latest discoveries. The event concluded with a stimulating question-and-answer session, leaving attendees eager to engage in the club's intellectual journey.

GCBS Inaugural Lecture 2023

The Gargi College Botanical Society, TARU, marked the commencement of its session with a splendid inaugural ceremony on the 26th of September in the year 2023. Ms. Seema Charla, an esteemed authority in the realm of Science of Spirituality, graced the occasion as the distinguished guest speaker. She eloquently elucidated to the assembled students the profound path to academic excellence, elucidating how the practice of meditation can serve as an invaluable tool in their scholastic endeavors. After this encouraging lecture, Ms. Seema Charla and the faculty advisors distributed badges to the office bearers of the society. The program seamlessly transitioned into a practical demonstration of environmental stewardship as a tree plantation ceremony unfolded. Saplings were meticulously distributed among the attendees, symbolizing the society's commitment to fostering sustainable ecosystems and nurturing the growth of knowledge and greenery alike.

Research Methodology: Online Inter-college Skill Enrichment Course

Under the aegis of Research and Development cell and IQAC of the college, the Department of Botany has conducted an online Inter-college Skill Enrichment Course 2023 on the topic "Research Methodology Course for Undergraduate Studies". The course has introduced the basic concepts of research methodology, which enables the students to identify research areas, learn the tools and techniques for the collection of sample /data analyse and interpret the data.

Biocomposting Methods

To promote importance of plantation, every year botany department with members of garden committee distributes saplings to the students, teaching and non-teaching staff of the college. Sapling distribution is a common practice by the department after every event or any extra-curricular activities. Such as:

  • Saplings were distributed to the teachers, non-teaching staff members and students of the college during annual Flower Show “Gargi Bloom” 2023 - held on 15th March 2023.
  • Saplings as well as compost were distributed to the participants of the workshop- "Biocomposting Methods" held on 5th June, 2023

valedictory lecture on "Recent Advancements and Possibilities in Plant Molecular Farming for Biologicals

On 19th April 2023, GCBS organized a valedictory lecture on "Recent Advancements and Possibilities in Plant Molecular Farming for Biologicals" by Dr. Manoj K. Sharma, an Assistant Professor at the School of Biotechnology at Jawaharlal Nehru University. Professor Manoj provided an elaborate account of plant farming and plant genetic engineering, with a particular emphasis on novel products of industrial or therapeutic significance that can be produced through the use of genetic engineering methods.

Fallen Art’ an inter-college art competition and Your Slide Your Pride

On 28th March 2023 under best out of waste theme ‘Fallen Art’ an inter-college art competition was organized that involved creating artwork using fallen leaves, flowers, twigs, and other natural materials.

On 29th March, 2023 "Your Slide Your Pride", a plants' section dissection and identification competition was organized. The inter-college event involved a fun and knowledge with microscopes that brought an insightful experience to both the participant and the audience, making it enjoyable for all.

Gargi Blooms 2023

On 15th March, 2023, Botany department in association with college garden committee organizes its Annual Flower Show: Gargi Blooms 2023

Gargi Blooms 2023 provides an interactive platform to the students to interact with the experienced gardners and Botany teachers on how to improve their Garden and make them as pretty as Gargi’s garden. The flower show beautifully display the floral glory of the Botany Department.

Environmental and Social Perspectives on Fashion Industry

On 10th February 2023, the GCBS-TARU, in collaboration with the Research Development Cell (RDC), organized an interactive talk on "Environmental and Social Perspectives on Fashion Industry" by Professor Vandana Mishra [Department of Environmental Studies, and Director, Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies for Mountain & Hill Environment (CISMHE), University of Delhi]. Prof. Vandana emphasized our role as consumers, and how our small steps such as extending product use time, slow consumption, developing emotional connections, environmentally friendly clothes, etc., can help mitigate the pollution generated by the textile industry.

Alumni Interaction 2023

The Alumni Interaction event serves as a valuable platform for current students, offering insights into prospective career paths they may wish to explore in the future. With the aim of sharing in-depth knowledge about the various career opportunities post-graduation, the Department of Botany at Gargi College, University of Delhi, collaborated with Samavaya, The Botany Alumni-Student Interaction Forum, Gargi College, to host this event on February 4, 2023, conducted via the Google Meet platform.

On 28th January, 2023, an online Essay Writing Competition "Write Out Loud" was conducted giving topics related to environment and plant sciences.

Departmental Interaction

The Gargi College Botanical Society- TARU, on 27th January, 2023, organized a fun interactive session with the first-year students of the Botany Department. The session consisted of introductions among the students and familiarisation of the students with the department and its work. The event also featured fun games that were entertaining for both the participants and the audience.

Orientation Day

With the utmost ardor and enthusiasm, the Botany Department of Gargi College welcomed and counseled the freshers into the department on 2nd November 2022. The students get to know about the department's building, equipped labs, research opportunities, the Gargi College Botanical Society, and its annual publication- Anthesis. The TIC, Dr. Renu Soni then progressed to accustom the freshers to the new syllabus, including the value added courses (VAC) and Skill enhancing courses (SEC), and also talked about the benefits these courses would grant the students for their future ventures.

Intercollege Add-on course on the topic- “Advances in Plant Sciences” for the academic session 2022-2023

  • The Department of Botany embarked on an inter-college, Interdisciplinary add-on course titled "Advances in Plant Sciences," which attracted more than 50 enthusiastic participants hailing from various colleges within the University of Delhi. This course was thoughtfully designed with the primary objective of enlightening students about the paramount importance and significance of plant sciences, as well as the ever-expanding horizons in each sub-discipline of Botany. Research concerning plant life greatly enriches our understanding of the intricate processes within the plant kingdom. The study of plants equips us with invaluable insights into addressing issues related to agriculture, public health, and environmental concerns. Advancements in the realm of Plant Sciences represent a pivotal stride in meeting the requirements of the modern era.
  • Since the inception of this course, commencing in October 2022 and extending through April 2023, a total of 14 lectures and two workshops have been meticulously orchestrated. These sessions were skilfully conducted by distinguished research luminaries hailing from prestigious institutes and universities. Following each session, students were given the opportunity to evaluate their newly acquired knowledge through online tests, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the subject matter.

Beginning of academic year 2022-23, was initiated by organizing the inaugural lecture on 9th September 2022 by Dr. Srivalli Krishnan, Senior Program Officer at Agricultural Development at Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, where she provided deep insights on the topic "Connecting Agriculture to Nutrition Climate- Where are the opportunities?"

Online Add-on course on Eco-friendly Agriculture for the academic session:

    1.   2021-2022 and
    2.   2023-2024

 

  • The Department has also presented an online Add-on course on Eco-friendly Agriculture. It includes lectures from renowned resource persons and experts from the field. The curriculum covers the aspects related to eco-friendly sustainable agriculture with focus on applications in organic and natural farming practices.

Alumni Lecture Series

Alumnae are crucial to any institution as they help in building and grow an institution's brand, continue to benefit the institution from their skills and experience and serve as a great role model for current students. They also offer practical support to their students as they begin their careers. With all this in mind, Department of Botany organized an Alumnae Lecture Series for its students so that they can be guided by prestigious alumni about the courses available, institutions, scope, how to go about a particular career and how to select what fascinates and interests one such that they become an inspiration for the upcoming generation.

During pandemic time, we have organized Virtual Alumni Lecture Series (2021-2022).

The current academic session also embarks with the initiation of Alumni Lecture Series (2023-2024).
