The Department of Chemistry was one of the first few departments in the College which came into existence in 1967. It started with a one year premedical course followed by B.Sc. (General) Physical Science and Life Science. Our founder member, Late Dr. C. K. Khurana along with other teachers of the department played an integral role in shaping the department to bring it to its very best. The prestigious B.Sc (Hons.) Chemistry was introduced in 1991 with our first batch graduating in 1994.

Our present teaching faculty of 18 specializes in diverse fields of Chemistry and allied subjects such as Medicinal chemistry, Green Chemistry, Biochemistry, Heterocyclic chemistry, Bioinorganic chemistry, Theoretical Quantum Chemistry, Nanochemistry, Analytical chemistry, Electrochemistry to name a few. The dedicated laboratory staff of 14 look after two Chemistry Laboratories, two Instrumentation rooms, a research laboratory and the store. All the laboratories are equipped with the latest instruments such as electronic melting point apparatus, spectrophotometer, colorimeters, rotatory evaporator, ice machine, electrophoresis, hydrometer, UV lamp, magnetic stirrers and Ultrasonicator. A well stocked departmental library meets the additional demand for books.

Every year students from various states of the country and different school boards enroll in Gargi for the much-sought after Chemistry Honors course. The intake in B.Sc Hons Chemistry is 40 students per year.

The academic rigor and training imparted to the students in the department helps lay a strong foundation of the subject. While most of our students secure First Division, some have also attained University positions. The University Science Meritorious students’ award is bagged by many of our students of I, II and III year.
