Courses Offered

Major & Minor Programmes

The Department teaches English to students of all courses, including those majoring in the Sciences, Commerce, Arts and Elementary Education streams.

Students can opt for either single discipline honours courses or multi-disciplinary Major or Minor programmes of study through the department, and can receive degrees at exit points in the first, second, third year respectively, or in the fourth/final year with a dissertation on a subject of their choice. These compulsory core courses focus on building foundations to grasp literary styles, perspectives and canonical authors like Shakespeare or Jane Austen or European and Indian classics like the Illiad or Silappatikaram that have stood the tests of time.

Discipline Specific Electives

We offer a wide choice of Discipline Specific Electives in various arenas of literary study of interest to both major and minor level students. Areas range from understanding analytical and critical concepts like marginality or feminist theory, to papers that survey literatures thematically and historically, like Partition literature, European literatures, literatures from South Asia and Africa, to name a few.

Skill Enhancement Courses

A rich choice of Skill Enhancement Courses   (SECs) in subject areas where the focus is on training and skill-building, such as marketable soft learning  and leadership skills like public speaking, creative writing, professional and digital communication, visual communication, etc., are  available to students from all departments.

Generic Electives

For students who take up a “minor” in English, we offer Generic Elective Papers, specifically to students who take admission in other Departments of the college. These papers are true eye-openers to the power found in the profound enjoyment of learning to read and understand the socio-cultural nuances of everyday experiences through texts, both written and visual.

Our offerings include a mix of the contemporary, popular and canonical subjects to ensure that all students get wide and balanced exposure in the subject, irrespective of the level of study or point of exit.
