B.Sc. Programme (Life Sciences & Physical Sciences)

CIC: Dr Niyati Singh (L.Sc.) & CIC: Mr Munish (P.Sc.)

The B.Sc. Programme in Gargi College is a multi-disciplinary course offering an undergraduate of four years under NEP Scheme. The programme gives a comprehensive foundation in each of the subjects offered, building the necessary skills and knowledge needed to move further in the field of sciences, research and explore in multi-dimensional fields.

B.Sc. Life Sciences:

B.Sc. Life Sciences is an interdisciplinary course offering courses in three disciplines, namely Botany, Chemistry and Zoology, which the students are taught with equal emphasis. The Botany and Zoology department offers in-depth study of plant/ animal cells, microorganisms and biodiversity. Areas like anatomy, physiology, immunology, genetics and taxonomy are covered with latest biotechnology and microbiology applications. The Chemistry component encompasses the entire spectrum of chemical preview via inorganic, organic, physical and analytical chemistry along with green, biochemistry, forensic and cosmetics chemistry. It may help in exploring the medicinal, clinical and instrumental approach for higher studies.

B.Sc. Life Sciences usually combine theoretical knowledge with practical laboratory work, field studies and research projects to provide students with hands-on experiences and skills development. The course aims to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills in students. Simultaneous learning of the three subjects allows students to better analyze the world around them. After completing a B.Sc. in Life Sciences, graduates can pursue various career paths or higher education, including:

  1. Higher studies like M.Sc., M.Phil., or Ph.D. in specialised areas of life sciences.
  2. Research positions in laboratories or institutions.
  3. Environmental conservation and management roles.
  4. Teaching and academic roles in schools or colleges.
  5. Career in scientific policy-making, healthcare and pharmaceutical industries.

B.Sc. Physical Sciences:

It is an interdisciplinary course offering courses in three disciplines, namely Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The programme gives a comprehensive foundation in each of the three subjects offered, providing the necessary knowledge and skills needed for pursuing a higher education in any of these subjects. The Physics department offers a wide spectrum of subjects ranging from the Classical/Newtonian mechanics to the present Quantum Mechanics This includes classical mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics and other advanced topics in physics. The Department of Chemistry covers everything from Organic to Inorganic chemistry, Physical to Analytical chemistry along with instrumental analysis. Last but not the least, the Department of Mathematics, is like a backbone for any course in Physical Sciences. Students get to learn subjects like Calculus, Algebra, Differential Equations etc.

B.Sc. Physical Sciences aim to develop critical thinking, problem-solving and analytical skills in students. The interdisciplinary nature of the course allows students to explore the connections between physics/chemistry with maths, providing a strong foundation for further studies or careers in scientific research, education, industry, or various other fields. After completing a B.Sc. in Physical Sciences, graduates can pursue various career paths or further education, including:

  1. Higher studies like M.Sc., M.Phil. or Ph.D. in physics, chemistry, maths or related fields.
  2. Research positions in laboratories or institutions.
  3. Teaching and academic roles in schools or colleges.
  4. Opportunities in industries related to technology, materials science, electronics, and many more.
  5. Pursuing a career in scientific communication or policy-making.

The B.Sc. Programme gives you amicable exposure to each of the fields, building the basic framework in each of the subjects offered and letting you explore and study the fields of botany, zoology, physics, maths and chemistry. The programme gives you strong theoretical as well as practical fundamentals in all the core subjects which builds a firm basis for your further studies. The course allows you to familiarise yourself with different fields and strengthen the basics and allows the students to explore their potential. Students may also have the opportunity to choose elective courses based on their interests and career goals via SEC, VAC, GE and DSE papers.  There are some undergraduate research projects under Pathfinder, Star College and other schemes done by the students under the guidance of expert faculty members.

The Course-Coordinators for the course are: Dr Niyati Singh (Department of Chemistry) and Mr Munish (Department of Physics)

ZENITH ASSOCIATION (BSc Programme Association) is the combined academic society of the both L.Sc. & P.Sc. students serving as the link between students and the teachers. Association activities are looked by the selected student union members by the students of respective courses. Student develop their leadership and management qualities by conducting co-curricular activities. Here they built their personalities as a well-being for future. All events were planned and executed by the students under the supervision teacher convener of the society.

Some of the Zenith association events held in year 2022-23 session were:

  1. Inaugural lecture by Dr Meena Bhandari (Dean of the School of Basic and Applied Sciences, K. R Mangalam University) on the topic Spectroscopy in Sept 2022.
  2. Another engaging session “Rangmanch”, where the participants showcased spectrum of their talent.
  3. A seminar on the occasion of the International Year of Millets -2023 was taken by Dr Bharti Chaudhary (Associate Professor, Ramjas College, DU) on the topic 'Traditional Grains': Pseudocereals and Millets for good and Nutritional security, in Nov 2022.
  4. With the beginning of new year 2023 a poster making competition was held on the topic “Today’s India” celebrating the Amrit Mahotsav.
  5. A mysterious Treasure Hunt was organized in March 2023 on theme “Labyrinth of Science”.
  6. Realizing the importance of meditation and mental health, a session was held on the topic “Connect I with God” by Dr Neha Singh (Assistant Professor, Botany Dept., GC).
  7. Mental health initiative “Happy Hours” were held every month twice for students to release the stress and had a healthy-interactions.
  8. Online interactions were held as the career counselling session, with our esteemed international alumnae Dr Sneha Yogindran (Assistant Prof., Cochin University of Science and Technology), Dr Anamika Upadhyay (Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc.) and Prof. Divyangana Dhankar (Associate Professor at Jindal Global Law School).

  1. Scintillation-2023: Science fest of Gargi College, “STEMerald Lineage of Well-being” in which two events of Zenith were “Sci Snap” & face painting stall by L.Sc. and “Mind the Acid” fun game by P.Sc.
  2. Youth Parliament: NEP implementation, how it transformed the education system and Women Safety, challenges and measures was organised in April. In which, a small Parliament House along with ministers, cabinet members, speaker, media cell etc were made. L.Sc. was the ruling party and P.Sc. was on opposition side.
