About the Department

The Department of Philosophy, Gargi College, was established in 1995 and is more than 25 years old. The Department offers BA Hons. and BA Prog courses to undergraduate students. Apart from these, the Generic Elective (GE), Skill Enhancement Course (SEC), and Value Added Course (VAC) offered by the department are popular amongst students of other disciplines. Our committed and experienced faculty specializes in diverse areas like Indian Philosophy, Greek Philosophy, Aesthetics, Philosophy of Religion, Philosophy of Law, Social and Political Philosophy, Philosophy of Language, Analytical Philosophy, Feminism, Bioethics, Logic, Continental Philosophy etc., and have also participated and widely published papers in many National and International conferences and journals. 

This course familiarizes students with the foundational areas of the subject engaging in epistemology, metaphysics, ontology, logical reasoning, and nature of value in ethics and aesthetics. It will equip students with critical reasoning, analytical problem-solving skills, expressing with precision, and engaging rationally with arguments and point of views. Philosophy as a discipline is popular for students interested in making a career in fields like education, research, media and mass communication, social work, civil services, law, gender studies, film appreciation, etc.

The department organizes seminars, talks, lecture series, and panel discussions for the intellectual development of the students. Many eminent scholars from India and abroad have delivered lectures in the department like Frishbee C Sheffield, Kamla Bhasin, Dr. Vijay Tankha, Judge Saurabh Kirpal, Prof. Rakesh Chandra, Mrinal Satish, J L Pandit, Prof. Balaganapathi Devarakonda and Aakash Singh Rathore to name a few.

Other main departmental activities are our annual festival, Dialectica which is organized on a relevant contemporary issue to develop holistic understanding amongst students; annual magazine, Gnosis published by students of the department on a central theme; and our Philosophical Society, Mimamsa, which is a platform for philosophical discussions, debates, and philosophical counselling, fondly attended by students from all departments and teachers. The distinguished alumnae of the department are engaged and excelling in fields related to media, law, performing arts and academic research.
